Making some bookeneds by hand.

So far I used hand saws to rough cut and rip the board. Then a shooting board to create flat and perpendicular edges.

A saw and chisel to begin the curved edges. A carving knife to get me close and a spoke shave to give it a smoother curve.

Next will be dovetails.

Any tips? I’m not sure if mine is set up badly or if I’m just bad at using it. Probably both. It either glides without cutting or it bites hard and gets stuck or takes out a stupid chunk.

      A few tips.

      • Make sure sole is flat and smooth.
      • Flatten the frog so the blade makes full contact.
      • Make sure the area of the cap that touches the bald is flat.
      • Start your cut with the blade fully retracted. Then turn your knobs a quarter turn untill you begin to cut.

I’m not sure what the cutting angle should be or if you need a secondary bevel. I will be learning that probably tomorrow when I sharpen mine.
