A beloved family-run grocery store in Florida may soon close its doors after more than four decades in business — and the owners say tariffs are to blame.

The trouble began when President Donald Trump’s tariffs took effect, shaking the foundation of small import businesses across the country.

    News at 8:

Gullible business owner conned by Trump for the 13,123 time.

“I just didn’t think the 100’s of years of data we have on Tariffs and what they do to business was correct when Trump said otherwise. My son is blind from staring into an eclipse because Trump said that couldn’t happen too, and now I’m starting to think he might be wrong about stuff.”

I liked it when cartoons were this dumb instead of reality.

(This is not a quote from the article. I’m combining multiple stories of people getting conned by Trump for comedic effect because it’s the same story everytime.)

They never ask in these stories - would this Trump supporter be continuing that support even after being kicked in the dick? That’s the only part I’m interested in, because everything else these supporters talk about in these stories are things everyone with a brain saw coming.

They stand in front of the steam roller in Austin Powers and get squashed - would they do it again? My guess is they would, but I have to guess because no one ever asks!

if i was a business owner (which i never would be), in florida (which i also never would be), i would know to request that the interviewer leave that question out of the article, lest i add boycotts, vandalism, arson, death threats, etc to the money woes

I suspect you wouldn’t say “you know, that guy threatening to shoot me in the face with a shotgun seems like the right person to protect my face” either, in fairness.

Insurance clearly states it doesn’t cover riots, protests, acts of violence, etc.

So the owner did the smart thing not to aggravate the real MAGA terrorists.

Some of the stories do ask. Every one I have seen or heard, they still support Trump. They are unhappy about the specific issue affecting them, but they still believe the rest of his policies are the best ones on offer.

I do not believe turning voters is viable. But discouraged, less enthused Trump voters are more likely to stay home next election, so I see examples like this as potential hopeful signs for our country’s future.

    • Possibly. If it happened before they got citizenship, and if they forgot to tell the immigration officer about it, they could get denaturalized, not even kidding.

Btw: “Legal Weed” is a misnomer, admitting to smoking weed before you obtained citizenship is possibly grounds for denaturalization. Laws are so fucking insane.

Forget weed. They will look for anything. Ever drank too much at any point or gotten drunk? Even if it was in the privacy of your own home while watching a bad movie? They will label you an alcoholic and too much of a burden.

Wong, who supported Trump in the last election, said he was swayed by campaign promises to reduce grocery costs. But now, as his business struggles to stay afloat, he admits the reality looks very different. Grocery inflation is at a two-year high, and prices continue to climb with no end in sight.

Guess he didn’t believe him on tariffs though when he runs an import business.

Volume will make you more money than margins, Walmart proved that pretty handily. Cheaper groceries means more volume. They were pretty on point with that logic, grocery stores generally want cheaper stock so people buy more.

Interesting. But if this were a good solution to increase their profits, could they have not just intentionally lowered their own prices?

A good solution to this debacle would have been to not vote in the felonious conman who famously, and regularly, bankrupts businesses known to be the most consistent moneymakers man has come up with.

These people are not good at solutions.

The majority of them are not capable of learning. These people live fact-less lives. Their worldview is shaped by feeling and what others tell them. There is no use of critical thinking, reflection, scientific method, facts, or figures.

Unfortunately, they will only learn with a massive amount of pain.

Not defending the guy, he’s a moron for falling for Trump’s schtick and not following a simple chain of cause/effect - but I at least can understand the initial sentiment of wanting to support someone who claimed to stand up against “China”?

They just should’ve done a modicum of research to realise just how full of shit Trump actually is.

The longer I’m alive the more I think we need citizenship tests. You should have to earn citizenship, it shouldn’t be granted automatically, and at least one of the prerequisites for citizenship should be detectable brain waves. If you fail an EEG you don’t get to vote or own property.

I’m sure Trump cares as much about these folks as he does about George Santos. I expect he’ll be sending them a big check any day now.
