I have a messy situation here. All the password managers I have used so far don’t work smoothly on my device. So far, I have used 3 password managers. ProtonPass, BitWarden & KeePassDX. I’m on a Samsung device btw. None worked good for me to be honest. In case of Proton Pass, passwords don’t show up while I’m on a signup or login page for me even when I have literally saved them! It’s pretty frustrating. They show up like less than 20% of the time. And in case of Bitwarden, I installed it from Aurora Store and the app wasn’t even opening or working properly. I tapped on the buttons and it didn’t react to my taps at all. So I deleted it and reinstalled from F-Droid through the Bitwarden F-Droid Repo. Then it worked the first time and only that time. I signed in to my account in Bitwarden. And also saved a few passwords. I closed the app. I went to some signup and login pages on my browser, but autofill didn’t show up in this case either. Then I opened the app again. I entered my Master Password. But the Unlock button wasn’t responding even when I tapped on it again and again. In case of KeePassDX, the app won’t respond to my taps at many times and again, passwords don’t show up while I’m on a signup or login page. And I have installed another one yesterday, it was called 1Password. I don’t really consider that I have actually even “used” it. I only just installed it from Aurora Store and opened the app. But surprisingly, this app responded to my taps well and was working pretty smoothly (even more than Bitwarden did the first time). But then came a red flag, it offers only a 14 day trial and nothing else for free. And then I deleted the app.

I’m actually looking for a password manager that is free, private and secure (basically a service I can trust my data with), and works smoothly on my Samsung device. I want you password managers with these 3 qualities. So, please suggest password managers. I’ll probably check and test a few more password managers, even I still don’t find one, I’m gonna stick with Proton Pass which may not work completely smoothly and also frustrates me at times because I have to manually open the app and copy the passwords to log in or sign in to sites but still it has worked the best for me so far.

Note: I forgot to add this but I accidentally once deleted Google Play Services on this device before. So this is a fixed device from a local shop in my area. So this might be the reason why. But I’m still looking to try more options on my device. If those still don’t work, as I said, I’ll stick with Proton Pass

New update in case of Proton Pass: I updated my Proton Pass recently and have noticed that it has gotten pretty good at autofilling. The option to autofill now shows up 80-90% of the time.

    I have been using Bitwarden on my various Android phones (including Samsung) for years and had none of the issues you described. The problem could be your device.

      Exactly. The password manager registering an password input field or not is a function of Android and not of the password manager. The password manager doesn’t have the ability to scan every open app for password fields, that should be a horrible breach of the application sandboxing. Instead android notifies the password manager of a input field and overlays its icon to autofill. Changing to a different manager will not have an effect on the detection rate.

      I also think that. But I’m still looking to test out a few more password managers. And as I mentioned, if I still can’t find a good one for me, I’ll just stick with Proton Pass

    i use keepassdx, never run into the issues you’re describing. do your password managers have permissions to display over other apps and act as the password manager in settings?

      I dunno if there is a permission like that. But in each case, I have always selected the password manager I’m testing as the preferred autofill service

              I appreciate that you took your time typing this but I just went to settings>apps>Special Access but I still couldn’t find the “Display over apps” option. Well, I’m pretty sure I have enabled an option like that, if I didn’t, the password managers couldn’t have provided the autofill options ever

    Given you are having issues with clicks registering on 2 apps, I would guess it’s a device issue. Have you tried checking logs for those apps? What it your mobile model? When was the last system update and are you using any custom rom or root?

    Edit: Would also recommend a factory reset if possible given your play services was messed up. A full reset should usually reinstall all the apps that came with the mobile assuming you simply uninstalled it with adb.

    Although I am on grapheneos without play services on main profile and bitwarden works pretty well (except occasional issues with detecting login in apps).

      I use Samsung Galaxy Tab A9. I’m on Stock Android and no Custom ROM. My device isn’t rooted. Factory Reset was already done when I took my device to the local shop to fix it. And Google Play Services and all other bloatware are indeed back. I have deleted the bloatware again with Canta and Google Play Services is disabled. I wonder if this happens because Google Play Services is disabled or something though…

        Bitwarden doesn’t use play services, at least the fdroid version. You have to check the logs from app info for more details.

    I don’t think they’re intended to with this app? They don’t for me. Yes it’s a mild inconvenience switching over to me password manager to find a password but you don’t need to do it that often.

    I’m actually looking for a password manager that is free, private and secure (basically a service I can trust my data with)

    KeePassDX is uniquely appropriate to these requirements because it’s an opensource app with no sync, where everything else is a commercial platform with a free tier. Nothing is perfectly secure but with your own password db on your own device(s) you just don’t have the same attack surface that the commercial platforms do.

    There might be other opensource apps I guess but they’re not going to have the same heritage, reputation and provenance that KeePass does.

        That sounds like a device issue. The A series is Samsung’s budget line of tablets, so it was already underpowered from the moment you bought it. I used KeePass DX for a bit on my Pixel 9 Pro and it worked really well… But I wasn’t a fan of the interface, so I switched back to Keepass2Android.

    I use 1password because I got tired of fucking around with KeePass. It works well enough; sometimes the password field won’t show if the metadata isn’t set up right on the page, but it’s pretty trivial to open the app and copy me password to manually paste. I’m not sure you’ll find one that always works 100% seamlessly.

      So far, Proton Pass is the best one and has got even better with the latest update. Now the autofill shows up 80-90% of the time which is a huge improvement

    I’ve been using KeePass for years: KeePassXC on my PCs, OG KeePass on my work laptop, KeePass2Android on my Android devices, and KeePassium on my iOS devices. They’re all compatible with the same 2.x database version, and all are synchronized with each other via Syncthing.

    I’ve experienced some autofill issues on my Android devices, but that’s mostly due to a lack of metadata in those entries. Outside of that, it works great ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        Keepassxc on PC is compatible with keepass2droid on android, so if you sync your KPXC file, it’ll work on both

          The beauty of KeePass is that the same KeePass database can be accessed using any KeePass client, regardless of platform, as long as the database version and security measures are supported by said client.

          I use various clients, including the OG KeePass client, KeePassXC, Keepass2Android, KeePassium, and KeePass DX to access my database (synced across multiple devices via syncthing and regularly backed up to a separate location).

    LastPass worked better than Proton but I’ve switched to the Proton universe so I hope it eventually integrates better. Really, it’s only certain sites that don’t play nice with password managers. Reddit was one such place.
