  • I’m torn on the idea of arming leftists in the current climate. I don’t disagree with you there. I live in a somewhat rural area that is heavy Trump and the right wingers are heavily armed. I don’t blame a trans person for arming themselves to defend themselves in an area like this, and my post history reflects as much.

That said there is a difference between arming yourself and actively contributing to increasing the amount of arms in the world. And what made it interesting is you claimed this is an ethical and moral issue. If your friend worked to only arm leftists that would be an interesting take. I doubt this is the case though. I am assuming they are like any capitalist based on your first line - anyone’s money is good enough.

To answer your question as others have said the hammer has a utilitarian purpose, as do knives, as does dynamite. With the exception of something like skeet shooting guns sole purpose is to rob the consciousness of a living being. I do not believe that the sport outweighs the risk. There are far less dangerous ways to hunt, we’ve banned things like lawn darts for less when the danger outweighs the utility. America just has a raging hard on for guns because of military fetishism

  • No, I think systemic issues need to be addressed of course. But I think in America, as someone who has worked in mental health for decades, the use of “mental health” in the wake of large scale violence is exclusively a scapegoat because there has almost never been meaningful action behind it. Overwhelmingly in almost (if not) all states since 2008 mental health programs have seen massive budgetary cuts year after year after year.

And this begets the point that “mental health” is a weasel word for treating systemic issues. Frankly even if you increased the budgets of Medicaid and community mental health programs 10 fold I don’t believe mass shootings would be impacted much in terms of rate. The systemic issues that create these conditions - wealth inequality, racism, quality education access, quality healthcare access, etc would essentially all remain and take generations to resolve even if you forced fixes tonight. The rot goes deep. Almost any therapist who works in community mental health programs will tell you that most of their clientele suffer more from lack of resources than mental health disorders

  • what a stupid mindset. Show me a time someone managed to kill 20-50 people in a span of 15-30 minutes with a bow, let alone a knife, let alone a laymen that didn’t have military training.

As an aside the goal does not have to be to solve the problem definitively. It can be to make the problem markedly better. If mass shootings with body counts in the above turned into mass stabbings, which are obviously traumatic and horrible but typically have fatalities in the single digits (often only 1-2), is that not a tremendous improvement? It is of course still very worthwhile to address systemic factors that lead to violence, but making violence less severe is worthwhile as well.

  • At the moment of death you make a gurgling sound (unless you get like, splattered or whatever) and then it suddenly goes black like the end of the sopranos because your consciousness shuts off. Well it’s not really that, it’s inconceivable, it’s nothingness, it returns to the state prior to being born. Your consciousness is not magic or mystical, it’s merely an illusory byproduct of very high quality stimulus processing and extremely intricate nervous system for sensory input coupled with the capacity for short and long term memory. There is no magic moment of reconciliation unless self induced through social conditioning (eg religious guilt) and people like Trump and musk ultimately win by having a life of hedonistic excess with no repercussions while the rest of us slave away for a half day off and an aliexpress trinket here and there.

(sorry for spoiling a show that ended 18 years ago)

  • “He has good morals and ethics”

How could he possibly if he has devoted his life to creating weapons? What’s his response if and when his guns are used for violence, be it murder, suicide, armed robbery, etc? Even if he is “small time” for “enthusiasts” of the “sport” it is only a matter of time until this occurs. How does he reconcile this? That it’s not the guns fault? Just the glamorization of them, the obscene amount of them, the fact that they are readily available, pushing it onto “mental health”, or some other scapegoat that allows him to escape accountability for facilitating mortal violence.

I hope your friend goes out business and his entire industry collapses.

  • Lost media is a crapshoot. That’s basically like asking for the missing Dr who episodes or that movie about the clown that leads the kids into gas chambers at Auschwitz that Jerry Lewis did. Unless you’re really lucky at some yard sale you’re basically waiting for some industry producer to die and their tech nerd grandchildren to clean out their house and leak cool shit, or someone to finally catalog archives of remote broadcasting stations, or whatever.

Even then it’s still a crapshoot. Missing Dr who episode? Everyone wants those so when they’re found they get the fancy restoration treatment (assuming the person who find it realizes what they have, of course). But controversial shit like the holocaust clown and the sitcom you referenced? There are people who are probably happy to see that stay buried. See: the holocaust clown movie is not actually lost but the people who have copies refuse to archive or it in any meaningful way or exhibit it because they feel it’s tasteless or whatever. Censorship wins, though tbf the movie was described as just kind of shitty by people who saw it.

As for the show you want there is at least one episode leaked online which I assume you’re aware of because it’s all over the place, youtube, internet archive, etc. in addition this guy on youtube claims to have the whole series and appears to prove it by posting the VT clocks, which are preepisode slates used by channel 4. This could be easily faked though. In the comments he describes not wanting to release it in hopes of pursuing a legal means of release in 2017 (his video is posted 2016) which pushes towards fake because that timeline is obscenely short for doing all the licensing nonsense involved in properly releasing a dead show. He’s a corpo bootlicker (straight up says in comments won’t release out of respect for the rights holders, because apparently having your hard work never see the light of day is more respectful than acquiescing to social (likely advertiser) pressure and shelving it).

As far as I can tell that’s the only lead but if his video isn’t faked it suggests the tapes still exist. If this is the case your other avenue would be tape trading, which is this whole other crazy thing. This is really hard to get into because you kind of need to have a source for stuff that is rare and be willing to hoard it, which is shitty. There are people who hoard specifically to deal only with other people who hoard, which is so fucking dumb and it’s like who cares, but they do it. This is a whole thing and it’s hard to get connected with but the easiest inroad is a place like myspleen or forums dedicated to preservation (like the forums about restoring the original Star Wars trilogy, 4k77 and harmy and such). Every once in a while you’ll see people dump a bunch of 35mm scans onto myspleen or rare screeners, shows like this in much higher quality than ever seen, etc. sometimes it’s just a dude being sick and sharing but sometimes it’s one of those tape hoarders realizing that this one has been passed around so much it’s basically worthless and burning it for upload credit (which is functionally worthless on myspleen but w/e). And sometimes it’s someone taking a moral stand or whatever like a year ago or so someone posted like 20 35mm scans that were circulated in those groups but not to torrent normies. But if someone has this show it’s probably one of these nerds and they probably want some rare weird shit in exchange for it, like you have to buy a $2500 35mm print of Halloween 4 and send it to some rando who will clean and scan it professionally

  • What defines complete?

I have the whitest kids u know complete uncensored but the quality is poor for the most part. Seasons 1-3 are 480p dvd rips, season 4 is 1080p webrip, and season 5 is 720p webrip. However, whoever runs their youtube has posted the entire series in 1080p but it’s heavily censored - bleeped everything like slurs but also the word shit, large blurs over content like people committing suicide or a naked butt, etc

I have the original run of daria in mostly dvd quality but it’s restored. Original music returned and scenes that have been cut due to censorship manually edited back in (though this does occasionally cause the audio and video quality to dip)

Same deal for beavis and butthead, the state, ren and stimpy, Rockos modern life, etc

Most/all of these shows are on streaming networks which implies digital or film masters exist that would allow for a proper HD release of the original content. It’s a shame that it’s not done because of bullshit copyright/licensing issues and/or a lack of financial viability.

Michael and Michael have issues - a 1 season Comedy Central show with Michael Ian black and Michael showalter from the state. I have the dvdrip but hdrips were released. All the torrents for the hd rips are long dead and I lost the hd rips I had in a crash a while back.

    Probably more along these lines

As a more traditional answer to your question: a person with access to my Jellyfin server asked if I could get dancing with the stars. I got the recent few seasons but they wanted the old seasons, which apparently aren’t on any streaming networks. They also aren’t anywhere I can find. This was not a show I would typically watch or archive (apparently anyone else, either). As per the above I’m more into sketch comedy and I also have just a shitload of remux anime. it was interesting to me and I saw it as a challenge. I had never seen a show that is completely unavailable while currently airing. I was able to get season 1 in dogshit quality and about 70% of the remaining run but most of the early seasons are dead and gone as far as I can tell.

looking through my library I found some more:

Iron Chef - Japanese version - the episodes with the corny American dub from the 90s. I have 99% of this but am missing 23 episodes (out of 308 total) plus season 8, which is the renewal
