  • I don’t like “smart” features, I hate being forced to create accounts for everything, I want my data to only be local, I loathe smileys, I’d much rather talk to you face to face, I don’t know wtf is an app and why yours is just a wrapper to your webpage, pure html pages with terrible colour choices are fucking class, I say “hacker” to mean “hacker” and not “cracker”, I still don’t understand the success of tablets, and you look like a dick with your mini doomscroll machine on your wrist.

    EDIT: fixing rage induced typos

  • Nearly 20 years ago, first year of uni, living on my own in a big city.

I was riding a metro back home, messaging my then gf, when some dude grabbed and pocketed my phone. He had a friend with him. I asked him politely to give it back to me, he told me to go fuck my mum, so I started swinging.

I landed a few punches to each one before they started kicking me into a corner. They stopped and jumped out the metro at the next station and I did not dare give chase.

There were a few people in the metro who had seen everything, and no one had come to my help. In the heat of the moment, I may or may not have shouted a bunch of abuse at them which was very stupid and I regret.

  • At work: without a hint of hesitation, Microsoft Teams and Visual Studio.

Do I really need to explain the issues with Teams? As for Visual Studio: extremely slow startup time, idiotic msvc compiler, yappy copilot who won’t shut up, needlessly opaque “solution” format, moronic intellisense false positives, anything useful being hidden between layers of sloppy menus, and more… I have my own build scripts, compile with clang, and edit with whatever. I only use that piece of shit to debug and when it’s time to commit, to make sure it’ll work on my colleagues’ environments, as I don’t want to be the annoying contrarian, but it really bums me out.

On my personal machines: gnome. I have a love hate relationship with Gnome, because on the one hand, I agree with most design decisions and appreciate not having to spend any time configuring a lot of stuff, so it suits me very well, and on the other hand I get angry on the odd occurrence where I disagree with the philosophy and I have to install an extension which I know will break at every update.

  • Most phone apps, a lot of modern software, SEO bullshit, the current web, virtually every show, the vast majority of Hollywood films, a lot of the music that makes it to the charts, influencers’ “content”, adverts, the overwhelming pile of crap that no one buys on Steam, lots of AAA games that too many people buy on steam, the poorly-written bottom of the barrel fanfiction that passes as books, and a depressing amount of stuff posted on social media, including this comment.

Yes, I am grumpy today, why do you ask?

  • I was sat opposite a woman who had a grocery bag filled to the brim with crisps packets, or so it seemed. She started out just munching on crisps, mouth fully open, shoving her hands in there. She emptied two packs in between two stops (metro). Efficient.

When she had enough she started rumaging frantically through her bag for a solid 20 seconds, and then triumphantly dug out a can of whipped cream (squirty cream format for my UK friends), opened it, and just emptied the whole thing in her mouth in one go!

It was in France, of all fucking places.
