Some 62 European leaders and parliamentarians have warned against what they describe as a " prelude to a US military invasion " of Venezuela . In a letter, they condemn the US military deployment in the Caribbean Sea, near the Venezuelan coast, and demand its immediate cessation.
The signatories expressed concern about the presence of aircraft carrier groups (including the USS Gerald R. Ford ), B-52 strategic bombers , fighter jets, and troops already patrolling the region, arguing that this " poses a serious threat to Venezuelan sovereignty."
The text also notes that this escalation has already had lethal consequences, citing reports of US attacks on small boats that have resulted in the deaths of at least 67 people, " arbitrarily accused of transporting drugs ."
European leaders maintain that the current US aggression is the “latest attempt by Washington to threaten and undermine the sovereignty” of Latin American and Caribbean nations.
The letter draws an analogy with past regime-change efforts backed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), mentioning the coups in Chile (1973), Brazil (1964), and Guatemala (1954) . “The human cost of these regime-change operations was catastrophic, and their political legacy endures.”
“But this military deployment further elevates the gravity of the situation. If the United States launches a military intervention in Venezuela, it would mark the first US interstate war in South America ,” they point out.
On the other hand, they criticize the pretext of combating “narco-terrorism” as a script “as hackneyed as it is familiar,” likening it to the failed " War on Drugs " in Colombia, Mexico and all of Latin America, which, in their opinion, has only generated violence and destabilization.
The message is unanimous: “ No to war against Venezuela .” The signatories explicitly call on progressive forces across Europe to unite in support of the Venezuelan people and defend international law and national sovereignty.
For his part, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil thanked the UK parliamentarian Jeremy Corbyn (one of the signatories) for his message of solidarity, in which he condemned the US military expansion in the region as an attempt to " impose its colonial model."
“On behalf of President Nicolás Maduro, we thank Corbyn for his message of hope, and we reaffirm his words that change, progress and the future are unstoppable ,” the Venezuelan Foreign Minister stated.
