LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – Demonstrations erupted on Tuesday across several areas of Syria’s coastal region, predominantly inhabited by the Alawite community, as residents demanded political decentralization, the release of the detainees, and an end to kidnappings and killings.

The protests came in response to a call by Ghazal Ghazal, the spiritual leader of the Supreme Alawite Council in Syria, who urged citizens to demand “federalism and political decentralization, an end to ethnic cleansing, killing, kidnapping, and captivity, and the release of detainees from prisons.”

Cities and towns including Jableh, Tartus, Baniyas, and other surrounding areas witnessed coordinated demonstrations echoing these demands.

Local sources told North Press that security forces intervened in some locations to disperse the gatherings, leading to clashes with demonstrators.

They added that most shops and markets closed amid a heavy security presence along major streets in cities and towns.

As of the time of publication, the Syrian transitional government has not issued a statement regarding the demonstrations across the coastal region.
