      It’s a motte-and-bailey argument, in fact. The whole purpose of the “skill based hiring” argument is to serve as a comfortable retreat from the more controversial “black people can’t fly planes”.

        It is always based upon skills. DEI just asks employers to consider hiring outside white males. This is a bridge too far for racists.

      “You see, when I change the words he said to be adjacent, and less offensive, you guys calling him bad names are the real baddies”.

      My favourite version of this is the “you’re just taking what he said out of context” replies to people quoting the shitty things he said… Then you go back to the original context to check and it’s actually much worse.

      They’re lying to fool themselves when playing to the middle. The middle is who they’re trying to convince be on their side.
